Sports Art

Sports art has a rather glorious past. Olympic chariot races were captured on Grecian urns, the Aztecs depicted their favorite sport of tlachtli (a mix of volleyball, basketball and football) in their ancient works, Degas painted horseracing…. Sports art is a wonderful way to capture the human form in motion. It can be exciting and emotional.

It can also be a sound buy. As one collector puts it, sports art offers two opportunities to see a return on your initial outlay. If you purchase a painting of an athlete, you’ve got a shot that both the athlete and the artist will do well in their respective careers. It combines two opportunities and two passions, which is a powerful force that is growing the sports art market.

Sports artists are serious and well-trained artists. Some of the more sought-after sports artists include Leroy Neiman, Carlo Beninati and Malcolm Farley.

Sports art also fulfills a historical duty, often immortalizing sporting moments from yesteryear of which there is limited or no visual documentation. Artists often look at the sports world with a sense of legend and heroism, qualities that are being lost in today’s corporate-controlled sports arena.

“The thing about sports art is that it is storytelling art. So long as there are stories to tell, it will remain popular.”
Ann Rein, Purdue University National Art Museum of Sport
